A lesser-known fact that diabetes can cause harm to your feet as well. A small incision can lead to grave consequences. Your feet may lose its ability to feel since diabetes damages your sensory nerves. Diabetes causes hindrance to the normal flow of blood to your feet, and so it becomes difficult for your body to resist an infection or heal any kind of injury. Due to this, you may not sense the presence of any foreign objects inside your shoe. It may result in you getting a sore or a blister. This might lead to a non-healing wound or an infection that may cause serious danger to your health.
To avoid the grave foot problems which may result in your losing a toe, foot or even your leg, there are certain guidelines that need to be followed.
Daily inspection of your feet is absolutely mandatory. You must check for swelling, redness, blisters, nail problems and even minor cuts. You need to consult a doctor if you spot such things.
Lukewarm water must be used to bathe your feet. Avoid hot water use.
You need to keep your feet clean by trimming your nails, washing your feet with a soft washcloth and carefully cleaning the area between the toes.
You can use a moisturizer to keep your skin moist and prevent it from cracking or itching. You can wear socks while you go to sleep if your feet turn cold during the night. Make sure you wear special socks made for diabetic patients.
